Privacy and terms

Buzz Games is three small puzzles run by Connecticut Buzz. It keeps as little as it can and still have a leaderboard. This page says exactly what that is, what other people can see, and how to have yours removed.

What is stored

Nothing at all until you post a score. Play, close the tab, and no row exists anywhere. When you do post one, the row holds:

• A player ID. A random string your browser made the first time you played. It is not linked to your name, your device, your address or anything else — it exists so that today's Buzzle and today's Buzzword can be recognised as the same player.
• Your Buzz name. Whatever you typed. Three to twelve letters or numbers, chosen by you.
• Your town. Picked from the list of Connecticut's 169. Your county is worked out from it; you never type one.
• Your result. Which puzzle, which day, how many guesses or reveals it took, how many points.
• How you arrived. One short code — a newsletter, a challenge link, or nothing — so we can tell whether the games are reaching anyone. If you came from a challenge, the code of the play you were answering.

No email address is ever attached to a score. If you leave one it goes somewhere else entirely, which is the next section but one.

Your unfinished games, your streak and your all-time record live in your own browser and are never sent anywhere. Clearing your site data clears them.

What other people can see

Your Buzz name and your town, on the leaderboard. That is the whole point of a town leaderboard, and it is worth knowing before you choose a name. Nothing else you give us is ever shown — not your email, not your player ID.

A challenge link you share carries a one-off code and the score to beat. It never contains your player ID.

Email, if you leave one

Leaving an email is optional and it changes nothing about your score. The form only appears after you have posted one, and skipping it costs you nothing.

We hold it for four things, which are the four we said on the form:

• Getting in touch if you win a prize — a monthly leader we cannot reach cannot be sent anything.
• Telling you about a special offer or a sponsor giveaway, if we run one.
• Letting you know if Buzz Games opens in your county, when it is not there yet.
• Telling you if we start a free local weekly where you live.

We will never share or sell it, and it is never shown on the leaderboard. It is not added to HartCo Buzz or Quiet Corner Buzz — those are separate lists you subscribe to yourself. If that ever changes we would ask you first, because it is a different thing than what you agreed to.

Cookies and tracking

There are none. No advertising, no analytics scripts, no third-party trackers, and nothing follows you off this site. The site loads its typefaces from Google Fonts and nothing else from anywhere else.

The short code recording how you arrived, described above, is the whole of what passes for analytics here. It is attached to the play, not to you, and it is a code for a link — not for a person.

Age

Buzz Games is for 13 and over. It is made for the readers of two local newsletters and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly keep anything from anyone under 13; if you believe we have, write to the address below and it will be deleted.

Getting your name off the board

Write to tyler@connecticutbuzz.com and say what your Buzz name and town are. We will delete your scores, your name and your email, and that is the end of it — no account to close, nothing to confirm twice.

The same address works for a correction, a question about any of this, or a photo credit that is wrong.

The rules of the games

• One scored play per puzzle. Yesterday's puzzles stay open in the archive but do not score — a week that has closed has already been reported in the newsletter and must not change afterwards.
• Scores are worked out on our side from what your play actually was, so editing the page does not change what lands on the board.
• Buzz names get a filter. Anything impersonating Connecticut Buzz, or that we would not print in the newsletter, gets removed without notice.
• The board resets Monday morning, Connecticut time, and the week that just ended is what the Tuesday newsletter reports.
• Prizes, when there are any, are announced in the newsletter and are ours to award. We can correct a board that has obviously been gamed.

Every BuzzEye photo is freely licensed and used unmodified — the squares covering it are drawn on top in your browser. Photographer, licence and a link to the original are on the photo credits page.
